Santander Cycles hire cost

London's blue Santander Cycles (formerly Boris Bikes) are dock-based and useful for the central / Thames path / Hyde Park loop. The day pass is cheap, the weekly pass is cheaper if you ride more than three times. Each individual ride is up to 30 minutes included — longer rides cost per minute.

Pricing based on Transport for London published 2024/2025 tariff. Day pass £2.20 (with 30-min included rides), weekly access £20, per-minute overage £0.08/min.

What this solves

London traffic and tube prices push more visitors towards the Santander Cycles for short hops — especially around Hyde Park, the Embankment and King's Cross. But the day pass is cheap only if your average ride stays under 30 minutes; longer rides start adding up. The weekly access pass is the right answer for 3+ days of multiple rides.

FAQ

Is the day pass enough?

For a single afternoon with two short rides, yes. For a 5-day trip with three rides a day, weekly access is cheaper (£20 vs £11 daily × 4 days + overage).

How do I take a longer ride?

It's billed at £0.08/minute. A 60-minute ride adds £2.40 overage. Most rides don't go beyond 25–30 min if you dock at the right station.

Can I dock anywhere?

No — Santander Cycles only dock in the central zone: Hyde Park, City of London, King's Cross, Waterloo, Paddington. Brixton or Camden — not covered.

Helmets?

Helmets are recommended but not legally required in London for cyclists over 14. A few docking stations have a £2 helmet rental — small but worth considering.
